Cancer Screening Programs: Are they effective?

Discussing cancer screening and treatments are always  highly emotional.  Many people tell me that without the screening, their cancer would not have been found.  Therefore, the screen saved their life and everyone should do it.  This is similar to the person that says they will not wear a seat belt because they or someone they know was in an accident, thrown from the car which saved their life.  The reality is that when a person is ejected from a car, survival rates are low.  But you will not convince this person of that.

The purpose of any screen is to find a disease early so that the disease is stopped in its tracks and especially to prevent death from the disease.  So how effective are screens at accomplishing these goals?  Here is a link that discusses the reality of mammograms.  Gather knowledge for yourself – and ask questions of your doctor!
